Are You In Financial Debt ? Don't Know How To Cope?
Feeling stressed out and emotionally drained? Read on, for there is a way through this.
Hello,
My name is Kate Judge and I have been a debtor, a bankrupt and a debt adviser in that order. I wrote ‘Fantasy Island Finances: Shamed by Credit’ when I was coming out of the chaos and humiliation of being heavily in debt.
'Fantasy Island' was born out of a diary that I kept when I finally awoke to the devastation
that my financial ignorance and mismanagement had created. I use these diary extracts in the book as
they accurately reflect the raw emotions that were involved when I had to deal with creditors,
debt agencies, financial institutions and the bankruptcy court.
"At a time of serious financial worries for so many people, "Fantasy Island Finances - Shamed by Credit" offers a unique insight into a
personal journey of financial difficulties, debt and eventual bankruptcy. It is inspirational and informative and shows that, with courage and
support, it is possible to find a way of dealing with financial hardship. I have bought an extra copy for my local library."
Barbara Hann - Manager - ACE Credit Union Services
‘Fantasy Island' refers to the ‘cuckoo’ state in which I was living regarding my finances. I thought that good money management involved being able to service my overdrafts from my monthly income, leaving me with no money of my own. I then used the overdrafts to pay the monthly instalment due on the loans and the minimum repayment on the credit cards. A recipe for financial disaster, although I was unaware of it at the time.
"Fantasy Island Finances helped me to realise that getting into debt I couldn’t handle didn’t mean that I was a worthless human being. It helped me to regain my dignity."
‘Shamed by Credit’ refers to the emotional devastation I felt when I started to take responsibility for my
financial situation. I had been in a financial ‘fog’, thinking that I was managing my finances properly.
I was being lent vast sums of money after all, so I must have been handling things well! I was naive and,
whilst I take full responsibility for taking on the loans and the credit cards, there does seem to be a
need for more checks and balances on the lending criteria of financial institutions.
In 2003, I could not find a book that documented the emotional fall out of being over-extended with credit. I desperately wanted to know that I could survive debt and bankruptcy and that there was hope and light at the end of the tunnel. I wanted a book that could hold my hand whilst I had to deal with all the of letters and phone calls that can plaque someone who is in debt.
"Fantasy Island Finances’ will hold your hand through the difficulties of debt and bankruptcy."
‘Fantasy Island’ is a very accessible book chronicling how I got into debt, came out of financial denial, survived bankruptcy and finally achieved successful financial management. Drawing on my experience as a debt adviser, there are chapters regarding how to deal with creditors and debt agencies and still remain empowered.
"When it comes to dealing with debt and money problems there is nothing
more powerful than hearing about the first-hand experience of someone who
has fought the battle and come out on the other side. It's also absolutely
vital that we recognise the emotional impact that debt can have, if we
think of it as simply being a financial problem then we've missed the
point entirely. My hope is that many are inspired by Fantasy Island
Finances to tackle their own money issues and to always see the light at
the end of the tunnel."
Chris Tapp - Director - Credit Action
This ebook is dedicated to anyone who is suffering or has suffered because of debt.
Above all, I hope that this book will reach out to anyone who may be contemplating taking
their own lives. No matter how much you think you have let yourself or others down, there is
always hope and a way to create a new and wiser financial future.
I know. I have been there.
"Less well documented is the emotional impact of debt how it can foster fear, shame and guilt. It takes someone who has been
though it to detail the despair and how they took control of a situation that drives many to suicide."
Jeff Salway - Personal Finance Editor The Scotsman
Well done for taking this vital step in resolving your financial situation.
